Blog 8: Essay Assessment

The paper that I have selected to access is the close reading essay. After looking over the evaluation system handout we received in class I would give this essay a low plus (if I can give pluses or minuses). I think that I have a lot of work to do on this essay if I do choose to put it in my portfolio and one of my three papers. I don’t think I unpacked my quotes well enough so that needs to be fixed. I think that I need to utilize my sources more and describe the authors of the quote further in depth. I do have an argument/ idea running through my paper, that all of our actions are catalyzed by a motive. Whether it is through our life experiences, family, or literature that we read. I do not think that my sources are engaged in my essay well enough. So that is defiantly a component that I need to work on. I also think that the writing in this essay is a little choppy and that my transitions could use some work. Over all I defiantly have the understanding that this essay needs a lot of revision, which is ok because this call is all about revision and how writing is a process. I am curious to see what comments Rachel has to make on this paper and to see if she accessed it similarly to how I did.

  1. I like how you broke down each part of your work and analyzed the different aspects of it. For me personally it helps me to visualize what parts need to be improved, and it's easier to see those parts when you look at them separately. I find that my papers have these problems that you stated, but especially using quotes and sources to show my point of view. I can state what I want to say, but then I always have trouble adding quotes in appropriately to support my argument.

  2. I haven't read your essay myself, but I too have problems with all of those. I feel like it's a good essay, but when it comes down to Rachel's standards it definitely needs more work. Quotes are so hard, so I just wanted to say, "Don't give up :)". Introducing quotes and unpacking them is also very difficult for me. One thing I try to do while writing my essays now is think of Rachel. Sounds creepy I know, but as I'm reading my essays I hear her asking me, "Okay, so what's the whole point in that? Why should I care? Who is this person? Why are they credible sources?", thinking like this has really helped me. Maybe you can try it, and see if it works for you. Don't worry, I'm positive we'll have outstanding High papers by the time portfolio comes around. Revision in class will definitely help, and just keep an idea of what you want to change, and actually do it for revision.
